All about

All about

Animal abuse is when a human being knowingly commits physical, mental, or emotional harm to an animal - this can be in many forms such as torture, neglect, and malnutrition. Serious animal neglect of hoarding (fails to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, and veterinary care with many animals) is often an indicator of people in need of social or mental health services.

Laboratories

Laboratories around the globe are responsible for mass animal torture - they abuse over 65,000 dogs annually and over 19,000 cats. Not only do they abuse dogs and cats, but one laboratory test may involve over 10,000 animals. All together, laboratory testing uses 115 million animals in experiments every year.

Facts

Facts

The animals that are most likely to be abused include dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. Many people that have been convicted of abuse in people and children have also been found to abuse animals. Animal abuse reports are rarely reported - meaning that the real number of animal abuse is far higher than anyone knows. However, there are estimates. Annually, over 10 million animals in the US are abused to death. About one animal is abused every minute.

Farms/ circus

Farm and circus animals are often overlooked on the animal abuse aspect, yet sadly they are some of the animals that are most likely to be abused. 97% of animal cruelty cases come from farms, where most of the creatures die.

Farms

Farm

Factory farming is a type of intensive agriculture, specifically an approach to animal husbandry designed to maximize production, while minimizing costs. Industries mutilate and torture over 100 million animals per year while most die in factory farms without ever seeing daylight. Many machines in farms (not just factory farms) cut and hurt cows, pigs, and other animals while producing way more than their bodies can take. Horses also have it terribly. 100,000 horses die in the US every year — that’s over 4 million since 1980. Most of them are healthy and could continue to live if it wasn’t for the horse meat demand.

Circus

Animals in circuses are often beat, shocked, kicked, or killed just to become trained for public entertainment. 96% of circus animals live and die there. Since the government does not check the training sessions in circuses, many animals are hit and dragged by chains. U.S. circuses have abused and killed 126 big cats since 1990.

Pets

There are approximately 70 million pet dogs and 74.1 pet million cats in the U.S. where 20 men and women are assaulted per minute (an average around ten million a year.) Sadly enough, above 50% of the U.S.’s fur comes from China, where cats and dogs are bled and skinned to death.

dogs

Dogs comprise 65% of all of these abused animals - they are the biggest victim of violent owners and breeders. Over 10,000 bulldogs die in organized gambling dog fights every year. Unfortunately, Florida alone has been proved to have 483 drug-positive greyhounds throughout the course of 10 years. Also, there are over 10,000 puppy mills in the United States. Puppy mills are a commercial dog breeding facility characterized by quick breeding and poor conditions.

Cats

Cats

According to the FBI, as of 2016 there were 1,126 abused cats reported into their system - yet again, most abuse isn't reported. After dogs, cats are the second most common victim of animal cruelty.

Prevention

Prevention

How can we prevent animal abuse?

-Adopt a pet from a local animal shelter, not a breeder

-Give your pet proper care

-Donate, support, and purchase from reliable rescue groups/organizations

-Teach compassion for animals to kids

-If you see something, say something

-Educate those around you to animal abuse

-Avoid using products that are known to animal test -Always research where your products come from

A humane society is a group that aims to stop animal cruelty, they can help you help this cause

Organizations

Organizations

Some helpful organizations include...

The PAWS act (Pets and women safety) which assists victims of domestic abuse find the means to escape their abuser while keeping their companion animal safe - many victims remain in abusive households for fear of their pets safety. ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a website and society that focuses on saving the abused animals by raising fundraisers, and donations -they collect and process forensic evidence to help build cases against animal abusers - they put a voice for animals in court. Allen County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (ACSPCA) is a highly trusted society that promotes the prevention of cruelty to animals by providing a safe-haven for animals, an effective and comprehensive adoption program, and education and outreach programs.
