A 5 Session Self-Esteem Unit for a Middle School Girls Group
"Living in a world where everybody wears masks due to lack of self-identity, a brave girl encounters the truth that sets her free"
"Identity" is a project made for the youth in schools.
Written and Directed by: KJ Adames
Produced by: Stella Davis
A Word on Theory
Incorporating this in this way, leans toward an Adlerian and Existential approach in that it focuses on identifying our current conditions and how we view ourselves and whether or not this is authentic. The idea of "wearing a mask" is also socially motivated, yet founded in uniqueness.
The following activity may also include concepts connected to Cognitive Behavior Therapy in that we begin to focus on examining possible assumptions/conceptions about who we feel we are supposed to be.
On the inside of the mask, show who you really are.
For example, you may behave in an outgoing manner at a party with your friends, but you may actually feel somewhat shy.
On the outside of the mask put the faces you show your friends, family, teachers, for example. You can show these behaviors any way you like—with pictures, poetry, colors, words/slogans/phrases, etc.
1. On a scrap piece of paper have students attempt to define self-esteem.
2. Together, define self-esteem: Self-esteem means having a good opinion of yourself and feeling good about yourself as a person.
3. Hand out "Self Esteem Workbook" by Yanique Chambers
A Word on Theory
Analyzing how our self-esteem is influenced by the world around is is a Cognitive Behavior concept. This specific activity looks at how internal dialogue plays a central role in our behavoir.
A Word on Theory
Analyzing the impact of social media (among other things) on our lives can be connected to Reality Therapy. The focus is on what clients are doing and how to get them to evaluate whether their present actions are working for them.
Sarayu Chityala is a 15 year old teenager in grade 10 at Bur Oak Secondary School in Markham. She has had many negative experiences dealing with social media and society’s actions. But she overcame these experiences to become the confident and positive young woman that she is today. She now speaks about how social media can lead to lower self-esteem, the importance of being true to yourself, and explains why listening to society’s negative words is not the key to a happy life.
A Word on Theory
The following activity is rooted in Cognitive Behavior Therapy in that it focuses on perceptions and misconceptions
created through our
societal experiences.
Use Magazines to cut out images or phrases that show how society has impacted the way we see ourselves. Glue these images onto the Society Lenses.
1. Have students read the scenario ‘A day in the life of Katie’.
2. Then in pairs or groups, have them discuss and answer Question 2 about the way Katie is thinking (her self-talk)
a. What are some of the unhelpful things that Katie might be saying to herself?
A Word on Theory
Again, the following activities are Cognitive Behavorially based in that they focus on a person's belief system and thinking as well as internal dialogue.
3. Define Self-Talk and Discuss how it affects Self-Esteem
4. Complete “My Stinking Thinking” Worksheet on negative self-talk & "Self Awareness" Worksheet on our strengths, weaknesses, likes, & dislikes
