By: Claire Miller

Introduction

Should kids get paid for good grades? It might benefit everyone more than we know.

Why?

Should good grades be rewarded with money? This is a rising question schools are asking because of the potential benefits. I believe that students should get paid if they have high grades. If they are rewarded for good grades than it will have benefits now, and in the future. Getting paid will increase motivation, teaches kids about good financial values, and kids stay in school and do better

Should good grades be rewarded with money? This is a rising question schools are asking because of the potential benefits. I believe that students should get paid if they have high grades. If they are rewarded for good grades than it will have benefits now, and in the future. Additionally, getting paid will increase motivation, teaches kids about good financial values, and kids will also stay in school while overall doing better.

If kids get paid for good grades than it will increase motivation for schoolwork.

Reason #1

Motivation

When money is on the line, kids will do a lot to get it. This is why motivation increases when you offer to pay them. Kids are getting more and more lazy with all of the technology recently, and that could be to blame if kids don't make good grades. In the article "Cash for Good Grades? Some Schools Give It a Try" it stated that "Today, in an effort to boost achievement, some schools give students gift cards or high-tech gadgets." which is obviously going to increase motivation with rewards like that being offered. It also states in the same article that "Cash-for-grades programs may jump-start students’ motivation by providing real-world rewards for their effort and performance." If kids know they are going to get rewarded if they put effort in, than they will put effort in. Furthermore, Students will set goals for themselves so that their grades will continue to be good and they will continue to be rewarded in the future.

If kids get paid for good grade than it will teach them good financial values.

Reason #2

Financial Values

Teaching kids about finance is something that's hard to do without them having there own money. If they got money from having good grades, than they could easily learn about financial values at a young age. As stated in the article "5 Reasons to pay your kids for good grades", parents paying there kids for good grades "...reiterates the message we teach them about being conscious about financial decisions and spending money on things that really matter." for instance, Parents could reward or pay there kids for good grades and limit the amount of money they give there kids so they would have to choose what to buy wisely. Now by paying your kids for good grades, they will know good financial values and have motivation in school.

If kids get paid for good grades than they are more likely to stay in school.

Reason #3

Stay in School

Students that have low-income and are the minority are more likely to drop out of school, but if they could get paid for good grades than they wouldn't have to worry about a lack of money. Another benefit is that if students can't afford to go to college than they could get scholarships with good grades. Paying students for grades targets "kids who are underachieving and who are at risk of school failure." as stated in the article "Cash for Good Grades? Some Schools Give It a Try". This article also says that "...these programs “level the playing field” for low-income kids, since middle- and upper-class families are able to offer their kids cash incentives for academic achievement." Some students have to work part time along with school to help there family, but if they are paid for good grades than they could quit their job and have more study time.

On the other hand, some people argue that it will raise taxes. It will raise taxes, however, it will end up saving parents money in the long run when there kids get scholarships and other academic opportunities. If students get these opportunities than their parents will end up saving money and not having to pay for college, or at least not all of it. College is very expensive and probably more than what your taxes would be and that is why it will save money in the long run.

Counterclaim

Students getting paid for grades could really help today's generation of students. People are putting in the work and not getting any reward, which is why most students don't have much motivation. It increases motivation, teaches good financial skills, and helps kids stay in school. Not only could they finish high school, but many will also continue on to college with scholarships.
