The Hunger Games Hero's Journey

Katniss is living in a small house in district 12 with her sister Prim and her mother. There are fences all over the district and wires everywhere, life is horrible. After her fathers death in a coal mining accident it becomes very difficult for Katniss to make sure she is providing a good life for her family. She usually sneaks out of the house with her friend Gale to hunt for food and provide for her mother and sister Prim.

The ordinary world

The call to adventure in the hunger games happens during the 73rd reaping (selection ceremony) for the hunger games. Katniss's sister Prim gets chosen so naturally Katniss decides that she cannot allow her sister to go get killed, therefore she volunteers to take her place and that is where the adventure begins.

There is no refusal of the call in the hunger games, when Katniss hears Prim's name being called out during the reaping she steps up to volunteer and she is not stepping down.

In the hunger games, such a deadly and tragic game Katniss definitely needs more than one mentor. Haymitch is the main mentor who takes Katniss through the ropes, her back up mentor is Cinna, and even Effie helped the team from time to time. Her team is fully kitted out and are the reason she survived lots of things during the games.

Lots of people think that crossing the threshold is when Katniss enters the arena but it takes place ages before that. Crossing the threshold begins when Katniss boards the train. Lots of tasty food and luxury, a perfect way to cross the threshold into hell on earth.

Before the hunger games begins, Katniss must face many tests. She has to gain sponsors by impressing the judges to ensure her survival (which she definitely managed to do scoring an 11), she has to make sure she says the right things in her interviews, and she makes allies like Peeta and Rue.

Approach to the inmost cave

The approach to the innermost cave is when Katniss enters the arena. She is going through the silver tube with her heart racing, ready to got through the worst thing imaginable.

The ordeal

The ordeal in the hunger games consists of many challenges. Murderous career tributes, extreme weathers, tracker jacker wasps, poisonous berries, you name it. These challenges have been put in place by the capitol to ensure that Katniss doesn't survive withought some suffering.

The reward arrives when Cato is eaten alive by the dead tributes who have been mutated into flesh eating mutts. The games finally come to an end. Now Katniss and Peeta are in the arena alone, ready to both go back home to district 12 and live a life of luxury in a nice house, until.....

After they won the games, the capitol decides to change the rules again, forcing them to fight to the death. But Katniss and Peeta don't want to do this, so they devised a way to escape the games alive.

Katniss and Peeta decide to both die, they want to eat the poisonous berries at the same time. They decided that they didn't want to be the slaves of the capitol by killing each other and maybe blackmail them to let them both live. The capitol are forced into a corner and instead they change the rules back just in time and Katniss and Peeta spit out the berries and emerge victorious.

Peeta and Katniss survive, and they are ready for a life of luxury. Now that they are celebrities for defying the capitol, they are changing peoples views of the hunger games and the corrupt government. Is a revolution being stirred up, I think so.
