The adventure begins
Edward Hargraves was born in Gosport Hampshire England on the 7th of October 1816. He was a shopkeeper, sailor and adventurer. Edward travelled to California during the California Gold Rush, but he did not find gold there.

Edward travelled to Sydney, Australia in 1851. When he arrived he didn't even stop to see his family and instead went straight to the Blue Mountains in search of gold.
On the 12th of February 1851 Edward found gold near Bathurst, Summer Creek. Edward used panning techniques he used in California to look for gold and he found it!!!!
Looking for gold was very hard work. It was also very dangerous as others may have tried to steal his gold. In the goldfields there was very little food as they were a long way from a major town
Edward Hargraves main contribution to Australia was discovering a large amount of gold and starting the Australian gold rush

Between 1853 and 1854 Edward travelled back to England where he met Queen Victoria and wrote a book. Edward lived such a lavish lifestyle that he spent all his money and ended up very poor.
