  • Families can be classified according to their basic rules of descent. The rules of descent are very important for maintaining solidarity among families, clans, and relatives. Descent-group members believe they share and descend from common ancestors. There are two types of descent groups:

Unilineal Descent

  • Matrilineal descent/society- people join the mother's group automatically at birth. In a matrilineal descent, all of the children are going to be associated with both their mother and mother's family regardless of their gender. And they might share the same surname as their mother.
  • Patrilineal descent/society- people join the father's group at birth. All of the children are going to be associated with both their father and father's family regardless of whether they're male or female. They will also share the same surname as their father.

Ambilineal Descent

  • While in unilineal descent, children are involuntarily forced to live with either their father or mother's family group. Ambilineal descent claims that children can opt to claim lineage on either side of the family group. The individual has an option of choosing their own lineage.

Residence Rule

Neolocal Residence

  • In modern Western societies, couples often practice neolocal residence. The couples have freedom and option to live seperately from their respective families.

Patrilocal Residence

  • This refers when a married couple resides with or near the husband's parents.
