Starting in 1997 California adopted content standards that provide detailed expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
NGSS
What are the Next Generation Science Standards?
The NGSS ties in key scientific ideas and practices that all students should learn by the time they graduate HS. NGSS is not a curriculum.

Are the NGSS the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for science?
No. They have literacy components, but not the science.
