The modal verbs of English are a small class of auxiliary verbs used to express possibility, obligation, advice, permission, ability, …

The modals verbs in English are:

  • Can
  • Would
  • Could
  • Must
  • May

  • Should

Characteristics of Modal verbs

They don´t have infinitive

Can - Can´t - Cannot/ Should- Shouldn´t- Should not

ING - Canning / Maying / Shoulding

They don´t have gerund

He- She- It He cans / He mays He plays/ She eats

They don´t use "s" "es" "ies"

They don´t use auxiliaries

You can use them with another verb
