What is a modal verb?
The modal verbs of English are a small class of auxiliary verbs used to express possibility, obligation, advice, permission, ability, …
The modals verbs in English are:
- Can
- Would
- Could
- Must
- May
- Should

Characteristics of Modal verbs
ar-er-ir To play, To eat / To can/Not can To may/Not may
They don´t have infinitive
Can - Can´t - Cannot/ Should- Shouldn´t- Should not
ING - Canning / Maying / Shoulding
They don´t have gerund
He- She- It He cans / He mays He plays/ She eats
They don´t use "s" "es" "ies"
Do you can?/Do you may? Can you?/ May you?
They don´t use auxiliaries
He can play / he can speak / She can talk
You can use them with another verb
