WESTERN VISAYAS

Western Visayas is an administrative region in the Philippines, numerically designated as Region VI. It consists of six provinces; Aklan, Antique, Negros Occidental, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo.

The regional Center is Iloilo City. The region is dominated by the native speakers of four Visayan languages: Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Aklanon and Capiznon.

AKLAN

Kalibo is the capital of Aklan where the Ati-Atihan Festival takes place every third week of January.

Natural attractions include Jawili Falls, a seven basin, tiered waterfall and Ignito cave, locally known as elephant cave.

Despite the prevalence of Christianity, native beliefs about the aswang and the babaylan are still prevalent among the people, Kulam or withcraft, locally known as amulit is still feared by many residents.

When there is death in the family:

1. Hanging black cloth on the window facing the street

2. Members of the family are not allowed to take a bath until after the burial.

3. Children are not allowed to listen to radios. No social gatherings should be held during the period.

4. Weddings are postponed until after the year.

CULTURE AND BELIEFS

Ati-atihan- festival was to celebrate the treaty between the Ati and Malayan tribes who settled in the Island.

Bariw festival- it is a unique festival showcasing the skills of every Nabasnon in weaving bags, mats and hats made of bariw leaves

Bugna festival- festival showcasing the different locally produced products and eco-tourism destination of Tangalan like the marine sanctuary and coral garden.

Kali-Ugyon festival- this is the festival celebrated in Libacao every December 30 to January 1.

ANTIQUE

It is located in the western border of Panay. Natural attractions include the Igpasungaw falls in Sabaste, the Sira-an hot spring and Nogas island in Anini-y. Mt. Madia-as in Culasi is filled with exotic plants and animals like rare orchids, wild deer, boar and cloud rats.

Binirayan Festival

Celebrated every December 27 to 29. it was started in San Jose 34 years ago by the late Gov. Evelio Javier. A week long festivities of colorful street parades, beach shows, plaza concerts and beauty concerts.

Capiz province is known as the birthplace of the fifth President of the Philippines, Manuel Roxas. It is also known as the seafood capital of the Philippines.

Capiz is known for the brilliant Capiz shell produced here, it is used in making wiindows, lanterns, decorations, vases, etc.

Myths, Folklore, Superstitious beliefs and Practices

The early Panayanon believed in many gods.

1. Bulalakaw- bird which looked like a peacock and could cause illness

2. Bangutbanwa- prayed for good harvest and orderly universe

3. Mangindalon- who interceded for sick preson and prayed for the punishment of enemies

4. Soliran and Solian- who performed marriage cermonies

5. Manunubo- The good spirit of the sea

6. Kama-Kama- are dwarf living in earth mounds

7.Tamawu- spirits thhat can be either friendly or evil

8.Agta- a very dark, hairy person living in the forest

9. Amamanhig- a dead person who returned to life

10. Hiwit or barang- ritual that gives one of the power too inflict pain in enemy

ASWANG FESTIVAL

The town people celebrate their annual festival or called it tha Aswang Festival. it is celebrated every 29th and 30th day on the month of October. This includes the parade of participants donning the foremost dreadful costumes like "kapre", "Wak-Wak", and "Tikbalang".

Iloilo provice contains plenty of historical and cultural sites. The capital city of Iloilo celebrates the Dinagyan festival evry 4th weekend of January.

La Paz is known for the local dish "batchoy", a flavorful noodle and pork soup.

Dinagyang Festival- A religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City held on the 4th weekend oof January. Held to honor the Santo Nino and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island to them by Alis.

Carabao Carroza Festival- celebrated every 3rd of May and since 1973. the festival consists of three main attractions:

MANGGAHAN SA GUIMARAS FESTIVAL

An identity festival of the province celebrated every April 16-20 for the sustained promotion of Mango Industry. Manggahan culminates in a grand showcase of cultural festivals in a bis to show the world that there is more to Guimaras than its sweet, fiber and pest-free mangos.

Bacolod is the capital city of Negros Occidental, and it is home to a variety of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment. Natural attractions include Mambucal hot springs, Mt. Kanlaon National park, and Lakawon Island. Sugar and gold are the main products of Negros Occidental.

MASSKARA FESTIVAL

It gives the people of Negros, as well as local foreign visitors, a chance to drink and be merry for 20 days. Originally designed to show the hardships of the people of Negros. Has become a tool of escapism an a way to generate revenues for big business. Celebrated during October 1-20.

BAILES DE LUCES

It is a festival of lights for a thanksgiving celebration of the townspeople for all the blessings they received during the year. it also serves as an expression of hope for the coming year to be prosperous
