Transportation in the Elizabethan Era
Tranportation about london in the Elizabethan Era was difficult, slow and very expensive. And travle to forgien lands was even more difficult. Most raods were little than dirt paths that turned to mud when it rained. But travle was still extremaly common.
Although many think that only the poorest of people walked it was the most populaire mode of transportation expectialy overland because it enabled people to take shortcuts.
It was mainly the poor who walked from destination to destination but they wernt alone. University boys also walked several miles, mainly from class to class though. Even peddlers and merchants walked from town to town in big groups.
All but the rural poorest of people owned at least one horse. people who did not have a horse whould normally rent one at ther beggining of a jouney and then sell it at the end. Because women did not uasly ride alone they would sit on a pillion behind the man's saddle.
Back then there were three types of wheeled Vehicles. Cartes, Coaches, Litters and Carrages.
Cartes only had two wheels and were pulled by oxen or hoses.Carts were cheaper than coaches so travlers who could'nt afford to ride in coaches would go in this slow and uncomfortable mode of transportation.
