- The National Organization for Women was invented to achieve women's right and equality

-Fashion was very bland in the early 60's and changed to become very flashy in the late part of the decade

-Women's fashion was very covering and most clothing covered their whole body.

-Women's fashion later changed to become very revealing. They started wearing mini skirts and bright colors.

-Mens fashion was very conservative and had little colors.

-They formal wear often and had little patterns

-In the late 60's more spontaneous colors, patterns, and more versions of formal wear were introduced.

-Early 60's hairstyles for women consisted of high styled hairdos that were teased.

-In the late 60's women's hair "matched their feeling of revolution" and became really long or short.

-Men's hair was very proper in the early 60's. It was neat and well-styled.

- In the mid to late 60's they started going to hairstyling salons instead of barber shops.

-Their hair was now well-combed and parted to the side.

-Many accessories were a big part of the Hippie Movement and showed up at the end of the decade.

-Women's accessories included elbow-length gloves, purses, hats, daisy flower crowns, scarfs, headbands, etc.

-Men didn't wear many accessories but they did wear hats and many different variations of them.

-Tie-dye, circular sunglasses, flowers, and peace signs were very popular and mostly everyone wore these things.

- The Civil Rights and Women's rights movements took a big part in the 1960s and changed the culture for everyone.

- African American's lives were rough. Racism and segregation took place at school, workplaces, and throughout american culture.

- Though there were many setbacks they achieved their goal of starting the Civil Rights Movement.

- Women's were also fighting for equal pay, equal access to promotion at work and more career opportunities.

- They became mad about the situation and formed an organization called The National Organization For Women (NOW).

- The Hippie movement began in one of San Francisco's neighborhoods called Haight-Ashbury.

- They wanted to promote peace and nature instead of war and greed.

- By the mid 1960s there were more than ten thousand hippies living in that neighborhood.

- People judged them for rejecting the conventional customs of society.

- Movies took on bolder, more controversial subjects and echoed the turbulence of the time in which movies had not before.

How did slang terms affect the American culture?

Communication helped shape society, meaning that slang terms used showed the emotion and impact on others.

"The Fuzz"- This term referred to the police. During protests the police would have to come and stop the violence that took place.

"Bread"- This term refers to money. A bunch of people were fighting for equal payment so they started using this term as a substitute.

Other terms:

"Lay it on me"- This term means that someone wants to know what is on your mind.

"Gimme some skin"- This means that someone wants to shake hands with you. It will probably be in an exuberant manner.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. was the era's leader and he led the Civil Rights Movement.
  • In Greensboro North Carolina, in February 1960, four black students sat down at a whites-only lunch counter, and refused to leave until served (this had a major impact).
  • The protestors were trying to achieve racial equality and equal rights.
  • The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed and signed into law.

  • It was between North and South Vietnam
  • It became the government's top priority
  • Didn't have enough money to pay for the War on Poverty and the Vietnam War
  • The Vietnam War dragged on and led to the nation becoming divided

  • On November 22, 1963 John F. Kennedy was shot.
  • After JFK's assassination, President Lyndon B. Johnson took office and launched a set of programs into the Great Society.
  • The goal of this society was to put an end to poverty and racial injustice.
  • He accomplished programs such as, Medicare and Medicaid.

  • JFK promised to restore the American Economy with a set of reforms.
  • Unemployment increased and the Stock Market fell into a deep plummet.
