What is a Cacao Seed?

Origins of Cacao

Cacao comes from an a tree, called the cacao tree, and it is located in the Amazon Basin. Seeds from this tree can make cocoa, cocoa butter, and chocolate.

Who domesticated Cacao into chocolate?

The first people that domesticated Cacao were the Olmecs and the Mayans. It was domesticated 3,600 years ago.

What was the use of Cacao beans?

The first use if the Cacao bean was currency. It was believed by the Mayan's that the beans were given to them by the gods.

The first use of consumption for Cacao was done by the Olmecs. They purified the beans and made it into a liquid, added with water and other spices.

Discovery?

Columbus discovered the bean when he captured a canoe in Guanaja which is an island in Honduras. They first believed these were just simply almonds but later realized they were actually the cacao bean

There was also a high demand for cacao because of the benefits chocolate had back then. Some of the benefits that it had back then was that it could alleviate fevers, anemia, poor appetite, mental fatigue, and kidney stones

Negative Effects of Cacao

Negative effects?

Eating large amounts of Cacao can cause nervousness, increased urination, sleepiness, and faster heartbeat
