Checklist

  • Thesis statement - what/how/why
  • Topic sentences
  • Summary - Are the basic points of the stories and texts you discuss clear? Are authors introduced fully the first time you mention them? Are essay titles introduced fully the first time you mention them?
  • Use of sources - Are they well integrated? Unpacked and connected back to your broader arguments?
  • Correct citations
  • Works cited list
  • Spelling and grammar - Comma splices and sentence fragments

Tips for formal analysis

Consider not only what the text is saying but how they are saying it. Pay attention to:

word choice

repetition of words or phrases

significance of words or phrases

recurring motifs or symbolism

the perspective of the narrator

use of first, second, or third person

use of metaphor

how dialogue produces perception or conflict

moments of narrative tension

discussion of scenery

Turn in your final paper, your draft (from peer review workshop), your prospectus, and your peer review form in hard copy by 4PM on Friday June 15th

There will be a cardboard box outside my office door (3-36 Humanities Centre). Please place your papers (with prospectus, draft, and peer review form) in this box.

By 5pm on Friday June 15th, email me your final version of your paper ONLY.

  • If you have not yet finished providing commentary for your partner, do so now

  • If you have finished, make sure that your peer understands all their feedback and does not have further questions
