Fewer than three bowel movements a week.

Stools are difficult or painful to pass.

Have a stomach ache or cramps.

Feel bloated and nauseous.

HOW TO TREAT CONSTIPATION?

Treatment

Most cases of mild to moderate constipation can be managed by the person at home. Self-care starts by taking an inventory of what you eat and drink and then making changes.

Drink two to four extra glasses of water to relieve your constipation.

Identify whether the constipation is

Constipation usually goes away on its own without the need for medication.

  • Drinking more water

Giving time for defecation without interruption or stress may also be effective.

Take over-the-counter laxatives if necessary.

If the condition has worsened, visit your physician.

Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber

Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day

Exercise regularly

Treat mild constipation with a dietary supplement like magnesium.

Move your bowels when you feel the urge.

Do not wait.
