FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS

FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS

Some fundamental aspects of our social experience and identities, like race and gender, can be understood through the symbolic interactionism lens.

  • We imagine how we must appear to others
  • We imagine the judgement of that appearance
  • We develop our self through the judgements of others

POVERTY

ISSUE

As defined by sociologists:

The state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Poverty is a complex social problem that exist all around the world affecting over one billion people.

STRENGTH

CRITICISM

STRENGTH/ CRITICISM

  • Doesn’t give enough attention to either the importance of emotions or the role of the unconscious
  • Has too much emphasis on people’s abilities to create their own realities and not enough attention to the fact that we live in a world we didn’t create ourselves.
  • Lacks the bigger picture
  • Lack of attention to the role of biology.
  • Focuses on family interactions and the roles that individuals play in those social acts.
  • Social interactionism reminds us that we are all social beings, playing roles and learning from one another.
  • Provides a great framework for organizing and influencing research.

Applying symbolic interactionism on poverty

APPLICATION

Helps us understand poverty in various ways:

  • We have a very materialistic oriented world, leading people to to keep spending money and buying expensive things because that shows others that we are better = dept/poverty.
  • This is caused by the meaning that we give to expensive things and by how important someone else’s view on us is.
  • Through the symbolic interactionism perspective, one would view an individual in poverty as being hurt psychologically and socially through stigmatization and having little chance of escaping poverty.
  • poor people perpetuate their own poverty by participating in a "culture of poverty." For example, they choose friends and partners who are poor as they are, and suffer by association.
