Coronavirus

By Miranda Lupton

Introduction

1

Coronavirus is a new highly contagious disease caused by a new virus first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China but has since spread all over the world and resulted in many deaths. Coronavirus is a respiatory illness which can sometimes go away on its own. Most people infected with the Coronavirus will experience symptoms such as fever, coughing, sore throat and shortness of breath. The virus can spread from person to person, but good hygiene can prevent infection. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

How does coronavirus

spread?

2

Coronavirus spreads from someone already infected with to other close contacts with that person through contaminated droplets spread by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with contaminated hands, surfaces or objects. The approximate time between when a person is exposed to the virus and when symptoms first appear is 5 to 6 days, although this may range from 2 to 14 days. For this reason, people who possibly have been in contact with someone with a confirmed case are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands throughly with soap, using an alcohol based hand sanitizer frequently and not touching your face.

The immune system in

maintaining homeostasis

3

The immune system plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis by ensuring that the body can fight off infection and preparing the body to do so as well as helping the healing process. During infection, the immune system will cause the body to develop a fever and an increase in blood flow to bring oxygen and other immune cells to where the infection is. Homeostasis then helps to regulate the body temperature and stop the fever.

How does homeostasis work during Coronavirus?

Title

One of the main symptoms of coronavirus and most prominent example of homeostasis working within this disease is a fever. This is due to the fact the immune system is working hard to fight the virus and as a result of this, the body develops a fever which means the body temperature rises above 37 degrees. When you get a fever, in response, the hypothalumus (thermaregulatory control centre in the brain) will work to regulate your body temperature by using various thermaregulatory functions such as vasodilaton and sweating.

The immune system's

role in fighting Coronavirus

4

Many people have recovered from Coronavirus even though there is no treatment or vaccine yet, this means that the immune system can often successfully fight the virus by itself. Recent scientific discoveries by Australian scientists identified four types of immune cells which presented to fight Coronavirus. According to scientists, identifying when the immune cells kick in can help predict the course of the virus.

What is the science used to fight Coronavirus?

Title

Virology is the science and study of viruses. Virologists investigate what the nature of a virus is, how it acts on the body and whether a vaccine can be developed to prevent it. For many viral infections there have been developed vaccinations to prevent against more people becoming infected. There is currently no vaccine or treatment for Coronavirus as it is a newly introduced virus. It has been estimated that it will take around 18 months to create a vaccine for coronavirus so until then, doctors have to attempt to treat the virus with other forms of medicine.

Social and econimic factors

of Coronavirus

5

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, people are heavily advised to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, social distancing measures have been put in place and are strongly encouraged, schools are closed in many countries and most people have to work from home. Many small businesses are required to close down due to lockdown restrictions resulting in workers recieving reduced income or even no income at all.
