when, where and who was responsible for this occurrence
-Started in 1662 with British slave trade and Triangular Slave Trade. Slavery was outlawed by Britain in 1807, but ended in 1834 in the Caribbean.
-12 million slaves traded through Middle Passage. 50% of them died. 45% of those that survived were transported to the Caribbean Islands.
-Brought to British and French colonies in the Caribbean.
-Caribbean islands were home to massive amounts of mineral and agricultural potential,
-replacement of indigenous people with imported african slaves who did not know the land and thus easier to dominate
What were the factors that led to this occurrence, what impact did this have on both societies?
-Plantation Economy- economy based on agricultural mass production (requires lots of labor)
-Plantations needed high amount of slaves(average more than 150)
-Cost- African slaves cheaper than white indentured servants
-Blacks thought of as inferior “race"- lack of European education and physically advantaged for labor
-Climate- Caribbean climate resembled Africa, which slaves were better suited for
-Supply for demand; Black population in the Caribbean increased dramatically in the late 17th century because of Middle Passage
-White slave owners feared the overpopulation of blacks, using harsher treatment for control
-The higher slave population led to a much more impersonal running of plantations
-Free blacks and paid managers oversaw slaves
-This impersonality made it much easier for slave owners to free their slaves when they became too difficult to deal with.
- Established social class- Whites>Mulattoes>Blacks. Whites established superiority through violence.
Compare and contrast your form with traditional African-American slavery.
-Relied on slaves for cheap agricultural labor usually concentrated on one profitable crop (sugar)
-Similar to the US and Brazil, the crops (sugar) grown by slaves in the Caribbean were luxury, and not needed to survive
-Many slave rebellions took place
-Reduction of rights for blacks pre and post emancipation
-The American system had direct involvement between slaves and their owners; the Caribbean was absentee ownership with intermediaries
-Slaves were 80-90% of the population, 30% in the US
-The cruelty was way worse relative to slavery in the US
-Slaves were imported to replace ones who died, while in the US, the slave population was able to reproduce and maintain itself
-The Haitian Revolution was a successful slave rebellion, and the US had none that were successful
