Trigonometry in Medical Imaging

What is medical Imaging?

Introduction

Medical imaging is the process of creating visual pictures of the inside of the human body for diagnostic and treatment purposes. One main type of medical imaging, and the most common is medical resonance imaging

MRI

MRI

MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs and tissue in the body.

Scenario

15 year old girl was brought into emergency room after she slipped while skiing. As she fell, her leg got caught under the body of another skier who ran into her. She was admitted with a broken left leg.

Use of Trigonometry:

  • Her doctor would use of trig to determine the exact place size needed to fix and support it
  • Ex. Trigonometric function cosine

Use of Trigonometry

Example:

Example

Cosine= Adj/Hyp

Cos(20)= x/4

Cos(20)4=x

X= 3.76 inches

Scenario 2

A 32 year old man slipped on water and was rushed to the ER. As he was slipping he broke his fall by putting his hand behind his head which caused him to break his arm in half.
