Josephine Cochrane was an American inventor who is famous for creating the first working dishwasher.
She was a socialite.
The government of Romania issued a stamp with her face in 2013
She didn't finish school and married her husband at 19.
She was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1839.
She died in 1913 at the age of 74.
She took her husbands's last name, Cochran, but she added an E for woman independence.
Cochrane was known for being a socialite. This means that she had a lot of dinner parties. Normally, she would get her servants to wash her dishes. However, the night after one dinner party, Cochrane saw that one of her fine china was chipped. She was furious at how careless her servants had been with her dishes. That's when she started to wonder: why hasn't a machine for washing dishes been invented yet?
When water enters the paddles, it makes them spin around. Water emerges from some small holes in their surface as they spin. The paddles make lots of hot jets of water fire upward. After it hits the dishes, it falls back to the bottom to get heat up again. Then, it goes for another spin, until the dishes are clean. A sieve at the bottom of the dishwasher catches large bits of debris. Meanwhile, smaller bits go down the drain.
Unfortunatly, 20% of Americans have a dishwasher, but don't use it. 32% only use it 2-3 times a week. However, the dishwasher is more hygenic and takes less work than if you were to handwashing. The mechanical dishwasher is more hygenic that the modern dishwasher, though. Handwashing is more economical. If we didn't have dishwashers, it wouldn't matter. Dishwashers are one of the least used appliances in the U.S.
At first, people used to simply hand wash their dishes. Then Cochrane invented the mechanical dishwasher. She tried to sell it to housewives, but they didn't need it. That's when she started selling her dishwashers to hotels and making money for it. Then, the modern dishwasher was invented sometime later. Now, every typical American household has a dishwasher.
Unfortunatly, I don't see the dishwasher getting any changes or upgrades in the future. Many people don't use their dishwashers as it is. Perhaps in the near future, people will start using dishwasher more often. They might even be just as used as a refrigerator or microwave. However, I don't see it going any farther than that.
