Scientific Answer
What are they?
They're Fish with many Similar qualities to both Salmon and Carp but are in their own Genius.
About Aaptosyax Grypus
Aaptosyax grypus tend to survive about 10-30 years but this number is dropping very fast because there are so few left.
Although Aaptosyax Grypus is an omnivore, they prefer live fish as prey. Because they are very "fast swimming preditors", and inhabit fast moving deep rocky rapids they feed on fish in the middle and upper water levels.
Although they are most common along the Thai-Lao border at the mouth of the Mun River, its numbers have drastically decreased in recent years. This is perhaps due to dam construction or excessive gill netting, to which active pursuit predators, like this species, are particularly vulnerable.
I could not find any Food Chain diagram for the Aaptosyax Grypus but it is know to hunt anything it can take down. And they are being taken out mostly by over fishing and gilnets. I could not find any specific preditors fo the Giant Salmon Carp.
Many actually already believe that this fish is already extinct because it has been a relatively long since the lost Aaptosyax grypus was seen. When they are confirmed extinct, it wont effect the currently environment because there numbers are already so low.
What are we doing about it?
There is currently no conservation effort to save this fish from extinction. In fact, some already consider it extinct because of the time gap since the last time anyone has seen this fish and reported it to still be alive.
The World Wide Fund for Nature is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1961, working in the field of the wilderness preservation, and the reduction of human impact on the environment.
