Refugee is about three teenagers who are trying to escape their homelands to seek safety. Each characters journey takes place in different years. Each character is in a different crisis and also take place in different parts of the world.

Trying to escape from Bashar al-Assad the president of Syria.
Escaping with his little brother. Waleed, his baby sister, Hana, his mother, and his father.

Josef's Motavation
Josef's motavations to reach Cuba are to get away from Adolf Hitler and the Nazi's. He also wants to escape from the M.S St. Louis because there are sailors who want to hurt him. One person on the boat who dosen't hurt him is Captain Schroder. One other motivation is that he wants his family safe.

Isabel's Motivation
Isabel's motivations to get to the U.S are to get away from the starvation of Cuba. She wanted to get away because Fidel Castro was letting them leave and throughout her journey she thought of his quote " Fight againist the impossible and win".

Mahmoud was trying to reach Germany because that was the only place that accepted them. His motivations were to get his freedom for once in his life. His other motivation is his baby sister Hana.

About the M.S St Louis
About the M.S St. Louis
The M.S St. Louis is an actual real ship that sailed in 1939 to transport the Jewish to Cuba. The construction of this ship started in 1925. It's capacity was 937 passengers. Gustav Schroder or Captain Schroder was the actual captain of the ship. It's length was 574 feet.

Refugee is a book for students in grades 6-8. There are some swear words in this book. If you like history this would be a book for you.
