(Arthur) Boo Radley Infographic

To Kill A Mockingbird

By Samriddhi Dugar

According to the story...

Who is he?

In the story, 'To kill a Mockingbird' Boo Radley is described to be Scout Finch's (Protagonist) neighbour. At the start of the story he is labelled as a 'pychopath' as it is believed that he almost stabbed his father to death.

To Jem and Scout

  • For Jem and Scout, Boo was a symbol of mystery.

  • At the beginning of the story both Jem and Scout believed the rumours about Boo.

  • As the story continues, they realize he is not what is described as by the other neighbours. He is just a 'normal person with a normal life'

My Views

His Progression

At the start of the book I assumed Boo Radley was either..

  • Going to be the villain of the story. As from Scout's narration he seemed like a 'psychopath' and mental.
  • Or was going to become a character whos redemption arc and development was going to be irrelevant to the story because of how little I knew about the him in the first few chapters.

As the story progressed, I found out more interesting things about him and his character traits. Which include...

Mysterious

Boo Radley is a source of intrigue to the children, as rumours circulate around his past. He is said to have been involved in some dark incidents leading to his seclusion.

Reclusive

His

Nature

Boo Radley rarely leaves his house and remains hidden from society. His presence is mostly felt through small acts of kindness and the gifts he leaves for the children.

Behavior

Strange

Its very strange for Jem, Scout and Dill to have an unusual obsession with him. They have made so many attempts to try and get into his house and 'stalk' him.

Symbol of Purity

Innocent

Boo Radley becomes a symbol of innocence and purity, resembling the mockingbird in the novel. He harms no one and only wishes to protect the children from harm.

Mockingbird

Why?

Since he was locked in his house, he didn't do any harm. Hence becoming a mockingbird in the story

Misunderstood By Society

Misunderstood

The townspeople hold various preconceived notions about Boo Radley, perceiving him as a dangerous and malevolent figure. However, the truth about his character is far more complex and surprising.

Heart of Gold

Hero No. 1

In the climax of the story, Boo Radley goes out of his way to save Jem from Bob Ewell. He emerges from his seclusion to save Scout and Jem from an attacker. This act reveals his bravery and capacity for compassion. This shows that Boo Radley is, shy, yet has a good heart.

Why was Boo

so IMPORTANT in the

story line?

Significance

Contradicting to my original views about Arthur/Boo Radley, I believe Boo was a character who shows the readers that there is more to a person than meets the eye.

The novel explores themes of empathy and understanding, teaching readers the importance of looking beyond superficial appearances.
