Rainforests and deserts

Climates

  • Hot deserts have an extreme climate and challenging environment. There is very little biodiversity in hot deserts because of the harsh climate. Few species are specialised enough to survive there. Plants and animals which do survive there have adapted to difficult conditions. The biotic or living components and the abiotic or non-living components of the hot desert rely on one another - a change in one will lead to a change in the other.

Climates

  • As tropical rainforests are located on or close to the Equator, the climate is typically warm and wet. The high rainfall and year-round high temperatures are ideal conditions for vegetation growth. The wide range of plants encourages a huge variety of insects, birds and animals.

Animals

  • When people think of a desert, often camels and rattle snakes spring to mind, however many more animals call desert home. Foxes, spiders, antelopes, elephants and lions are common desert species

Animals

  • More than half of the world’s species of plants and animals are found in the rainforests. From monkeys to spiders, rainforests are teeming with life.
  • It is said that a single hectare (about two and half acres) of rainforest can contain up to 1500 species of plants plus 750 species of trees. It is this wealth of plant life that attracts and sustains an amazing collection of animals. For example, one in five of all bird species are found in the Amazon rainforest.
  • What are they
  • A desert is a barren area of landscape where little precipitation occurs and, consequently, living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to the processes of denudation. About one-third of the land surface of the world is arid or semi-arid. This includes much of the polar regions where little precipitation occurs and which are sometimes called polar deserts or "cold deserts". Deserts can be classified by the amount of precipitation that falls, by the temperature that prevails, by the causes of desertification or by their geographical location.

What are they

  • Rainforests are forests characterized by high and continuous rainfall, with annual rainfall in the case of tropical rainforests between 2.5 and 4.5 metres (98 and 177 in),[1] and definitions varying by region for temperate rainforests. The monsoon trough, alternatively known as the intertropical convergence zone, plays a significant role in creating the climatic conditions necessary for the Earth's tropical rainforests: which are distinct from monsoonal areas of seasonal tropical forest.

Plants

  • Desert plants have found a place in modern home and garden design. There are many plants in the desert that can survive in a xeriscape garden or even in a glass terrarium. The term xeriscape is derived from the Greek word xeros, which means “dry,” and is a form of landscaping that conserves water through the use of native plants. Thus, desert plants have become popular for landscaping because they are easy to take care of due to their drought-tolerant capabilities.

Plants

Home to an estimated 40,000 plant species, including 16,000 native tree types, with new ones still being discovered on a regular basis, the Amazon Rainforest is one gigantic expanse of greenery and accounts for some 20% of the world’s entire allocation of natural forest. Studies have shown that a single square kilometre of Amazon Rainforest can contain upwards of 90,000 tonnes of living plants. That being said, some of the most interesting and unique species of plants can be found in the Amazon jungle.

Conclusion

  • In the last century more change has occurred within tribal groups in the Amazon than ever before. In fact, there is probably not a single tribe that has not been effected by the outside world. This has made tribes relatively venerable to outside dieses like common colds and measles.
  • In the future I think the rainforest should be more sustainable by both tourists, logging companies, mining companies an dam companies.
  • It should also be a fair decision so the logging companies have to agree with the government and the tribal people. Also anyone found cutting down trees without an permit will get an 1000 pound on the spot fine , or if they don’t have the money - go to jail!

Conclusion

  • The desert is one of the driest and most arid place in the biosphere. There is little precipitation and extreme temperatures. There is little vegetation in the desert because of the extreme living conditions. However, despite the conditions, there is still a diversity of species living that have to adapt to harsh living conditions.
  • Deserts cover about one fifth of the Earth's surface. The largest desert on Earth is the Sahara desert in Africa, being over 9,400,000 square kilometres. Most deserts are located between 30 degrees latitude north and 30 degrees latitude south.
  • The desert biome is being disrupted by human activity, such as mining, agriculture, and urbanization. Therefore, the biodiversity of the biome is being affected and there are changes being brought into the biome.
