We want to create a Centre of Interfaith for Higher Learning, for postgraduate religious scholars from both local and overseas, by
painting a big picture of one big family and linking it through a journey.
This can be done by having “family room” spaces that evoke feelings of safety as they share about their religion and is willing to open up.
UNITY
Unity is shown by placing wooden strips in repetition to symbolise CIHL paving a journey that connects people of different religions together. The repetition of wooden strips that creates a tunnel, then translates into the form of spaces that unite people together, known as "family spaces". This tunneling experience also evokes a feeling of surprise that leads to curiosity in finding out more about the space.
INCLUSIVITY
Inclusivity is shown by incorporating family spaces such as the lounge areas of different levels, the café and etc to give a homely atmosphere. This allows people of different religions to interact and collaborate with each other, to achieve the design statement of painting a big picture of one big family and the purpose of CIHL, which is understanding and uniting people of different religions. This also helps evoke the feeling of safety as they share about their religion.
TRANQUILITY
Tranquility is shown by incorporating elements of nature and lighting to the wooden strips and the space. Greenery and lighting are essential to every religion as it symbolises hope and peace of mind. Incorporating greenery and lighting has been proven to affect one’s psychological well being positively.
