Lesson 2

with Mrs Wood

What am I ?

INTRODUCTION

I am a flightless bird that lives in the Daintree Rainforest.

I am the third-largest bird in the world and can grow up to 1.8 metres tall.

I am descended from a dinosaur.

I am a frugivore which means I mostly eat fruit.

I am the most dangerous bird in the world.

My name means 'horned head'.

I am considered the guardian of the rainforest.

A cassowary is a large, flightless bird found in Papua New Guinea, while the Southern cassowary is found in the Daintree Rainforest in Queensland. (habitat)

The cassowary is an important part of the Daintree Rainforest ecosystem and is considered a keystone species.

A keystone species is

one which has a large effect on the ecosystem it is found in.

It has a vital role in maintaining the function of the ecosystem and without that species, the ecosystem may cease to exist.

A keystone species is...

An ecosystem

It consists of many habitats and includes the interaction of living things.

Do all living things have a role to play in their ecosystem?

Why do you think the cassowary is considered the guardian of the rainforest?

RESEARCH

The relationship between fruit plants and the cassowary is considered to be mutually beneficial. They depend on each other for survival; the cassowary spreads the fruit seeds, after it eats the fruit whole.
