Blue Whales

Blue Whales

Population

Before Blue Whales were endangered their

population had more than 350,000 whales. Today, long after the whaling there is around

10,000 to 25,000 individual whales on Earth and they are now endangered.

Population

Habitat

Blue Whales live in all of the oceans except for

the Arctic Ocean. Most of the Blue Whales are

located in the Southern Hemisphere. The Blue

Whale population of the Southern Hemisphere is

from 5 to 10,000 whales.

Habitat

What part of the world are they found?

Blue Whales are commonly spotted in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off the coasts of Monterey, California, and Baja California, as well as Mexico.

More Habitat Information

Size and Weight

Blue Whales have an average length of 80 to 100 feet. This makes it the largest animal on Earth. They also weigh around 200 tons and this makes Blue Whales the heaviest animal as well.

Size & Weight

Predator & Prey

The average Blue Whale's diet consists of only krill. In other words, Blue Whales almost always eat krill. To my knowledge, the only animal that attacks Blue Whales are Orca Whales, also known as the "Killer Whale".

Predator & Prey

What is the role of the blue whale in the ecosystem?

In general, whales help to maintain the flow of the food chain. They also make sure a species doesn't overpopulate.

Whales feces can also play a huge role in the environment by offsetting carbon in the atmosphere.

Ecosystem

Endangerment

The Blue Whale species is an endangered species.

Endangerment

When They Were Endangered?

Whales became endangered in 1970 due to whaling.

When They Were Endangered?

How They're Helped

The blue whales are being protected by making whaling illegal internationally.

How They're Helped

Conservation Status

As of March 16th, 2018, the blue whale is considered as an endangered species.

Conservation Status

Donations

Wildlife charaties are raising money for conservation efforts. Examples of these include Save the Whales and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Their Mission and Background

Save the Whales

Save the Whales mission is to preserve and protect the ocean and its inhabitants.

Save the Whales was founded in 1977 when Maris Sidenstecker was 14 years old. It focuses on educating the public, especially children, about marine mammals and the fragile ocean environment.

Save the Whales believe children, the future of the planet, need to be empowered and know that their actions can promote change. They also believe that education is the key tio saving whales, oceans and ourlselves.

Their Mission

Sea Shepherd's sole mission is to protect and conserve the world's oceans and marine wildlife. They work to defend all marine wildlife, from whles and dolphins, to sharks and rays, to fish and krill.

Interesting Facts

Interesting Facts

  • Blue whales swim the ocean at over 8km/h, and they can reach speeds of around 30 km/h.

  • Because the blue whale is a mammal, it needs air to breathe. When it comes to the surface, it exhales air out of its blowhole in a "cloud of pressurized vapour" that rises about 9 meters above the water.

  • Blue whales are one of the loudest on the planet, and communicate through low frequency moans that humans can't hear. Some say that blue whales can hear each other u to 1,600 kilometers away.
