Why forest are important?

Forests have an huge impact on everyone's life:

  • provide oxygen that we breathe;
  • provide tons of wood;
  • provide habitats for thousand of animals;
  • work as a watershed protection;
  • prevent soil erosion;
  • mitigate and change the climate;
  • provide some medicines.

  • the State provided more than 45,000 jobs in 2005;
  • made more than $16 billion in gross business income and paid more than $2 billion in wages;

  • the average of wages are close to $50,000 per year.

Forest Practice Rules:

  • Washington State is one of the strictest state in the nation;
  • the activities have been regulated since 1974;
  • the rules have been strengtheneth numerous times;

Washington Department of Natural Resources

  • It manages 3 million acres of forests, agricultural and commercial lands, and 2.6 million acres of aquatic area;
  • it enforces rules that protect and regulate all of the acres;
  • most forest practices require a permit from the WA DNR.

The Forest & Fish Law

  • One of the largest pieces of environmental legislation in the U.S.;
  • it protects fish habitats and water quality on more than 9 million acres of State and private forest land;
  • it was developed in collaboration with federal, state, tribal county government and private forest landowners.

Reforestation

  • It is quickly: usually within 12 to 18 months;
  • on average 3 trees are plantented for one cut down;
  • the standards are regulated by the Forest Practice Rules.
