Back From the Brink: Alligators

mitigation options

7

if humans would stop messing with alligators and instead take precautions to avoid them then Humans and Alligators would have little to no issues with one another.

Conservation Issues

3

  • Human contact
  • Habitat loss
  • Hunting

Alligator-hide was a very popular type of fashion in the 19th century. It was so sought after that at some point the american alligator was on the brink of extinction. Their population dropped to an alarming 100,000, as opposed to the current 5 million.

Legal Protections

5

The american alligator was placed on the endangered list speies list in 1967. It remained on this list in 1973 under the Endangered Species Act. Being an endangered species the american alligator gained complete protection. CITES II and an amendment to the Lacey Act regulated the commerce of alligator products.

human impact

4

in the 1950's humans decided to drain wetlands for agriculture and development, which lead to a large decline in the population of gators because they would overheat from the sun and dry out and just die.

Conclusion

9

All in all Alligators are a very important animal to protect and keep around. For the health of our marshes and swamps

Recommendations

8

  • Specfic areas for alligators
  • Less houses near waterways

If we make zones for alligators to roam free without human contact, it would help both sides. Making less homes near where alligators live is the simplest way to reduce human interaction.

Background

2

  • They are found in swamps and marshlands throughout the southern united states
  • Alligators are vital to the survival of wetlands and swamps
  • Luisianna alligator population has increased from less than 100,000 to over 2 million in the past 50 years

Introduction

1

Alligator Conservation

It is very important to conserve alligator populations in the southern US because they keep many different animal populations in check and their gator holes help to keep all of the plants and other animals alive incase of a drought. The wetlands depend on these creatures
