Like all species of the genus Ceroxylon ("wax wood" in Greek), the Quindio wax palm has a cylindrical trunk covered with a white wax marked by scars left by the foliar bases. It is also the highest palm in the world, reaching up to 60 m in height or even more

This palm tree, which belongs to the species Ceroxylon quindiuense, is the national tree of Colombia and native to the Cocora Valley, a high valley of the Andean region in the department of Quindío, Colombia, from where it was considered basically endemic. However, a significant population was recently found to the south in the Andes of northern Peru.

It was a very abundant species in Colombia, but its population was
already shrinking due to several activities such as:
-The manufacture of candles in the nineteenth century
-The use of its leaves for Sundays of bouquets
-They were replaced by pastures for cattle
