Future Learning

Video

Keypoints

Keypoints

  • The biggest problem of our education system was that it didn't know how to motivate kids.
  • The current education model is really good at squashing that motivation.
  • Video games are among the most powerful learning tools that have been created.
  • When a child starts to play a video game, sometimes they'll fail then try again until they succeed and master the video game.
  • It's solving the problem when you bump into it and providing the relevance in solving the problem.
  • Children can teach themselves almost anything if:
  • given the internet
  • given the permission to interact with each other and;
  • given the absence of the teacher

Keypoints

  • One of the principles of adult learning is that you should learn something when you have a reason to learn it.
  • Education is rigid (not flexible) because education, as we know it, came from war.
  • The Victorian era (1837-1901) produced an education system which would make us photocopies of each other.
  • Being quiet and being submissive is how we are being taught right now.
  • Reading comprehension is the most critical skill at this point in time for a generation that's going to read of screens for rest of their lives.
  • Information search and retrieval skills is very important.
  • Teaching kids how to believe just like in any other generation where we teach how to fight with swords or teach how to ride a horse.

I want you to share your thoughts regarding the quote below:

Introduction to ICT

ICT

What is ICT?

ICT stands for "Information and Communication Technologies." ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It is similar to Information Technology (IT), but focuses primarily on communication technologies. This includes the Internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication mediums.

What is ICT?

Has ICT caused us to be less human?

How would your life be different without ICT?

What benefits or downsides have you experienced?

Hashtag

What is a hashtag (#)?

Until less than a decade ago, the symbol „#“ is used to signify only a term related to phones or a sign for „sharp“ in the musical notation system. Meanwhile, the perception has changed, and this simple symbol is one of the main tools of communication.

https://www.naylor.com/associationadviser/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2015/06/Hashtag-Comic.jpg

What is a hashtag (#)?

What is a hashtag (#)?

This simple „#“ sign is not only a part of social media language, but also a part of everything we consume. It even changes the way society writes and behaves since grammatically correct forms are no longer necessary today. According to research so far, short messages are 25% more interactive.

What is a hashtag (#)?

Activity 2:

  • Get the Top 3 trends in Twitter in the Philippines and Worldwide.
  • Get at least 1 related to tweet for each of the trending topics.
  • Place them in a Google Slides presentation.
  • Note the time and date you got the data and we will compare it with the other groups

World Wide Web

WWW (World Wide Web)

WWW (World Wide Web)

Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist. He was born in London, and his parents were early computer scientists, working on one of the earliest computers.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Ftim-berners-lee-the-web-has-failed-instead-of-served-humanity-2018-7&psig=AOvVaw2AhigU2TD2KM7g7Xc6CDAR&ust=1596620211111000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCOjUy_efgesCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

WWW (World Wide Web)

After graduating from Oxford University, Berners-Lee became a software engineer at CERN, the large particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. Scientists come from all over the world to use its accelerators, but Sir Tim noticed that they were having difficulty sharing information.

WWW (World Wide Web)

Tim’s original proposal.

In March 1989, Tim laid out his vision for what would become the web in a document called “Information Management: A Proposal”. Believe it or not, Tim’s initial proposal was not immediately accepted.

WWW (World Wide Web)

https://www.reachfirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Web-Development.jpg

By October of 1990, Tim had written the three fundamental technologies that remain the foundation of today’s web (and which you may have seen appear on parts of your web browser):

  • HTML: HyperText Markup Language. The markup (formatting) language for the web.
  • URI: Uniform Resource Identifier. A kind of “address” that is unique and used to identify to each resource on the web. It is also commonly called a URL.
  • HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Allows for the retrieval of linked resources from across the web.

https://www.prestigeacademy.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/top11.png

https://webfoundation.org/about/vision/history-of-the-web/

WWW (World Wide Web)

The World Wide Web is a hypermedia platform that harnesses the powers of the Internet to connect anything together – people, files, ideas, communities. Although he is the father of the World Wide Web, he does not profit from it the way other inventors profit from their inventions. In fact, the Web is an open, de-centralized entity in which anyone can participate. Though web technology and the Internet can be regulated, and often is by governments, the World Wide Web is not owned by anyone. It belongs to all of us.

https://www.freepik.com/blog/app/uploads/2019/10/Pinterest-Cover-De-Post-Del-Blog-Web-Design-Trends-1280x720px.jpg

WWW (World Wide Web)

Now, I ask you this. Is it reasonable to regulate and restrict our right to have an open and free Web?

Evolution

The Evolution of the Web

The web today is a growing universe of interlinked web pages and web apps, teeming with videos, photos, and interactive content. What the average user doesn't see is the interplay of web technologies and browsers that makes all this possible.

Over time web technologies have evolved to give web developers the ability to create new generations of useful and immersive web experiences. Today's web is a result of the ongoing efforts of an open web community that helps define these web technologies, like HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL and ensure that they're supported in all web browsers.

The color bands in this visualization represent the interaction between web technologies and browsers, which brings to life the many powerful web apps that we use daily.

Social Media Addiction

Social Media Addiction

Social networking addiction is a phrase sometimes used to refer to someone spending too much time using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other forms of social media — so much so that it interferes with other aspects of daily life.

There's no official medical recognition of social networking addiction as a disease or disorder. Still, the cluster of behaviors associated with heavy or excessive use of social media has become the subject of much discussion and research.

Top 8 New Technology Trends for 2020

Tech Trends for 2020

Technology is now evolving at such a rapid pace that annual predictions of trends can seem out-of-date before they even go live as a published blog post or article. As technology evolves, it enables even faster change and progress, causing an acceleration of the rate of change, until eventually, it will become exponential.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI refers to computer systems built to mimic human intelligence and perform tasks such as recognition of images, speech or patterns, and decision making. AI can do these tasks faster and more accurately than humans.

https://futureoflife.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/artificial_intelligence_benefits_risk.jpg?x59035

Five out of six Americans use AI services in one form or another every day, including navigation apps, streaming services, smartphone personal assistants, ride-sharing apps, home personal assistants, and smart home devices.

https://www.simplilearn.com/top-technology-trends-and-jobs-article

Machine Learning

Machine Learning

Machine Learning is a subset of AI. With Machine Learning, computers are programmed to learn to do something they are not programmed to do: they learn by discovering patterns and insights from data. In general, we have two types of learning, supervised and unsupervised.

https://www.simplilearn.com/top-technology-trends-and-jobs-article

Robotic Process Automation

Robotic Process Automation or RPA

Like AI and Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation, or RPA, is another technology that is automating jobs. RPA is the use of software to automate business processes such as interpreting applications, processing transactions, dealing with data, and even replying to emails. RPA automates repetitive tasks that people used to do.

Edge Computing

Edge Computing

Edge computing is designed to help solve some of those problems as a way to bypass the latency caused by cloud computing and getting data to a data center for processing. It can exist “on the edge,” if you will, closer to where computing needs to happen. For this reason, edge computing can be used to process time-sensitive data in remote locations with limited or no connectivity to a centralized location.

https://www.simplilearn.com/top-technology-trends-and-jobs-article

Extended Reality

Extended Reality (XR)

Virtual Reality (VR) immerses the user in an environment while Augment Reality (AR) enhances their environment. Although VR has primarily been used for gaming thus far, it has also been used for training, as with VirtualShip, a simulation software used to train U.S. Navy, Army, and Coast Guard ship captains. The popular Pokemon Go is an example of AR. Mixed Reality (MR) is the combination of the two technologies.

https://www.simplilearn.com/top-technology-trends-and-jobs-article

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity might not seem like emerging technology, given that it has been around for a while, but it is evolving just as other technologies are. That’s in part because threats are constantly new. As long as we have hackers, we will have cybersecurity as an emerging technology because it will constantly evolve to defend against those hackers.

https://www.simplilearn.com/top-technology-trends-and-jobs-article

Blockchain

Blockchain

Although most people think of blockchain technology in relation to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain offers security that is useful in many other ways. In the simplest of terms, blockchain can be described as data you can only add to, not take away from or change. Hence the term “chain” because you’re making a chain of data.

https://www.simplilearn.com/top-technology-trends-and-jobs-article

Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT)

Many “things” are now being built with WiFi connectivity, meaning they can be connected to the Internet—and to each other. Hence, the Internet of Things, or IoT. The Internet of Things is the future and has already enabled devices, home appliances, cars, and much more to be connected to and exchange data over the Internet. And we’re only in the beginning stages of IoT: the number of IoT devices reached 8.4 billion in 2017 is expected to reach 30 billion devices by 2020.

Platforms

Platforms

"If you can program it,

then it’s a platform.

If you can’t,

then it’s not."

- Marc Andreessen

Platforms

The term “online platform” has been used to describe a range of services available on the Internet including marketplaces, search engines, social media, creative content outlets, app stores, communications services, payment systems, services comprising the so-called “collaborative” or “gig” economy, and much more.

Technology Platforms

https://www.cloudways.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/AWS-for-beginners.jpg

Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Twilio are examples of Technology Platforms. Technology Platforms provide building blocks or services that are reused in a large number of products. Through permission-less innovation 3rd party developers embed these building blocks and services in their products, driving more adoption of the platform.

Computing Platforms

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcSREla9tFaj5fr6ExfaDJTAacH31VnxabrEXw&usqp=CAU

Computing Platforms, in stark contrast with Technology Platforms, enable interactions between platform users and 3rd party developers. In Technology Platforms the developer “owns” the user. In Computing Platforms, the platform “owns” the user. Computing Platforms, like Apple iOS, Google Android or Microsoft Windows, allow developers extend the platform with new use cases, making the platform more valuable to users.

Marketplaces like eBay, Amazon Marketplace, AirBnB, Kickstarter or UpWork are two-sided platforms connecting supply with demand. Marketplaces enable transactions between demand-side participants (buyers) and supply-side participants (sellers). Prices of goods and services offered on the platform are set by the supply-side participants. Not less important, there is high sensitivity for variety of services/products — generally, the more variety offered on the platform, the better.
