The geographic setting in this story is usually changing, due to the fact that the main characters are tourists constantly traveling from country to country. Meanwhile, the temporal setting is around the mid-1920's
Europe & Northern Africa
North Africa
The Riviera
Paris
Italy
The temporal setting of the story takes place during the mid-1920's, a posperous time for the United States. A new way of living was being introduced into the country, the younger generations turned to new leaders and values and sought unorthodox dress, recreations, and morals.
The story begins in the north part of Africa, with a bus filled with wealthy tourists. Here, the main characters meets an old couple, the Milles. We learn that this is a young couple that just got married and that they just came into possession of some money. We also get a brief mention of a young beautiful couple that's traveling alongside them.
The main couple spends a total of 4 years moving around Europe, entering different social circles and overcoming different struggles
From the moment Nicole started felling faint on the boat, to the point where they admit they're too tired and sick to deal with Chiki's betrayal. All of this mainly takes place in their house, and apart from the disappointment of not interacting with important social figures during the party, the Kelly's also discover that Chiki stole their jewels, and made them pay for the party
The Kelly's end up moving to Switzerland, a country known for its lack of tourist presence, with not many hotels in sight and some schools to be able to raise their child. Sickness has befallen upon them, and they´re officially done with parties. At this point, they just want to improve their poor health
Nicole and Nelson reflect about their married life, and how the company of others led to them having an unhappy married life. They tried to deny their craving for social interaction and lived life in a peaceful way. Still, they didn't completely manage to leave all the aspects of their old life behind, but now they approached them in a different way. Finally, in a moment of sudden illumination, they realized that the previously young couple they had seen during their trips turned out to be them.
Not to critize other people for who they are
Trembling, they clung together. The clouds merged into the dark mass of mountains; looking around after a moment, Nelson and Nicole saw that they were alone together in the tranquil moonlight.
(Fitzgerald, 1930)
This quote is important for the short story, because Nicole and Nelson realize that they became what they did not want to be. Thanks to a couple that leaves at the beginning and at the end of the story they recognize that they were not what they thought they were. In the story the couple leaves for the first time at the beginning but Nicole and Nelson ignored them, at the end of the story this same couple returns and they realized that they were themselves all that time, at the beginning they were nice but passing the time they became an unpleasant couple.
Succumbing to society’s ideals leads to the withering of ones self
the girl arrestingly light of hue in eyes and hair, her face without shadows, its living freshness modulated by a lovely confident calm.
(Fitzgerald, 1930)
Nicole found herself near the girl on the glass veranda. [...] she inspected the face closely. It was an inquisitive face. [...] For the rest, the cheeks were wan, and there were little pouches of ill health under the eyes; these combining with a certain flabbiness of arms and legs to give an impression of unwholesomeness.
(Fitzgerald, 1930)
These two quotes compliment each other. One of them is located at the beginning, during the exposition, and the other one takes places at the end, right in the middle of the resolution. They're both a description of the same character, Nicole, and the striking difference between them demonstrates the effects that a continuous exposure to a certain lifestyle had on her.
