When Long's mother died, his grandmother took care of him in Saigon. However, his grandmother didn't have enough money to raise him so she put him in an orphanage.

He lives in a Ohio family with the new name "Matt" and becomes a young doctor.

In the Vietnam war, over a million children were orphaned. Long is Amerasian, a mixed- race child, has little future in Vietnam. He has to try to survive in Vietnam.

He journeys back to Vietnam, ready to reconcile his Vietnamese past with his American present.
