Japan wanted to use the Coral Sea for island planes and sea bases. To stop Japan's expansion into the pacific ocean and to limit their control. The battle also took place to try and challenge Japan’s forces with relatively equal force. It ended because the weakened Japanese troops were met with a stronger ally. Causing them to lose the battle.
According to multiple sources, the battle only lasted a short time. Some sources say the entirety of the battle lasted from May 7th-8th, while other say Japan's attacks started on April 29th-May 4th and the US/Australia retaliated on May 7th-8th.
This battle signifies one of the first times Japan had been unsuccessful in a large operation, and it is known as the battle that saved Australia, as it stopped Japanese invasion of Port Moresby. It stunted Japans expansion east.

The battle took place off the north-east coast of Australia, eastward from New Guinea, and the Coral Sea.
