CRAFTS

DEFINITION

Middle English word for 'strength’ or 'skill’ derived from the Old English word craeft , and means “skill in planning, making, executing” and, by extension, “an occupation or trade requiring skill”

  • Each civilization has their own crafts for their own benefits.
  • Differ from culture to another and produced by the order from the state or privately.

Our earliest ancestors used animal hides to make shelter and clothing, and clay vessels to hold food and water

As civilization progressed, other crafted creations, such as mosaics and jewelry, had a more aesthetic purpose and held importance in religious, ritualistic, and cultural realms

  • Tracy, considered the 1st “occupation” therapist who write a book about occupation and crafts. ( invalid in occupation )

  • Examples of doctors who start to use the crafts in their treatment ;

1920-1930

  • More use of the crafts in the treatment.

  • OT use the crafts as a major therapeutic approach to heal their patients.

Post world war I 1930-1940

  • The Economic Depression.

World War II 1940-1960

  • Increased demand, growth of OT

  • A lot of people start to access to OT program

  • Occupational therapy became more narrowly defined and specialized because of educational standards were revised with a shift away from arts and crafts to basic sciences

1960-Present

  • Therapists become more proficient in the use of various treatment techniques.

  • It is difficult to ascertain the role crafts played in occupational therapy during this period because their use was not often discussed in the literature.

Patients who work to increase their strength and functional performance will work harder and longer if there is a meaningful outcome attached to their efforts
