The Story of the Five Suns

Introduction

Aztecs

The Aztecs were a theocratic society that believed Sacrificing others would appease their gods(Aztec Culture par.1).

Aztecs

Brave prisoners of war would parade playing a flute near the place they'll be sacrificed(Aztec Culture par. 9).

Believed in sacrificing their prisoners of war to apease their gods. This was to guarantee the rising of the sun.(Aztec Culture par. 2)

Main Characters

Huizilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl,

Tezcatlipoca, Xipe Totec, tlaloc,

Calchuihtlicue, Nanahuatzin, and

Tecuciztcatl.

The five Suns

The Story

Huizilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl, Tezcatlipoca , and Xipe Totec (the cardinal directions), created water, other gods, and The sea monster, Cipactli,who became the ground(Aztec Creation par 5).

To complete the world, a god needed to take the form of a sun(Aztec Creation par. 10).

Tezcatlipoca

Tezcatlipoca, the jaguar sun, acts as the sun for giants until Quetzalcoatl smacks the sun out of the sky with a big stick.(Doyle par. 20)

First Sun

Quetzalcoatl

Second Sun

Quetzalcoatl, the wind sun, takes Tezcatlipoca's place as the sun. The people living under this sun only had pine nuts to eat.

In the end, Tezcatlipoca kicked the sun out of the sky.

the people that remained became monkeys(Doyle par 21).

Tlaloc

The next sun was tlaloc, the rain sun. The people under this sun only ate river corn.

Once again, Quetzalcoatl ends the world, but this time, he sent a shower of fire onto the world.

The survivors became turkeys(Doyle par. 22).

Third Sun

Calchiuhtlicue

The fourth sun was Calchiuhtlicue, the water sun.

The people under this sun was only able to eat grass corn. They lived in never ending rain until the world was flooded.

The survivors became fish (Doyle par. 23).

Fourth Sun

Nanahuatzin

Fifth Sun

The current sun is Nanahuatzin, the Earthquake sun. through a challenge where the two gods, Tecuciztecatl and Nanahuatzin jump into a fire, it was decided both of them will light the sky.

to prevent the world from being too bright, a rabbit was thrown at Tecuciztecatl, dimming the god down and turning her into the moon(Doyle par. 26-27).

Literary Elements

Situational Irony

"This was a consuming monster, a jaw at every joint. Cipactli was to become the source of the cosmos in a strange way.(Aztec Creation par. 7)"

After the gods defeated cipactli she became the ground.

Repetition

Each god created different materials for earth but each one that did so became the sun(Aztec Creation par. 3).

Foreshadowing

Forshadowing

Nanahuatzin was the earthquake god before he became the sun so the aztecs believe that the world will end with massive earthquakes destroying it(Aztec Creation par 11).
