Introducing Friar Laurence
- Romeo goes to Friar Laurence right as the sun is rising
- Friar is picking flowers/herbs and commenting on the beauty and terror of plants (foreshadowing)
- Friar is concerned about why Romeo is there so early. What did he do the night before? Was he with Rosaline?
"Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here!"
- Friar is glad that Romeo wasn't up late with Rosaline, but is concerned about Romeo's sudden change of heart AND now marriage proposal to Juliet
- Just days before, Romeo came to see Friar and cry about losing Rosaline
- Friar says he isn't chiding Romeo for loving, but for doting
- "Young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes."

"For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love."
Friar Laurence agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet in secret

Romeo's Back
- Scene 4 begins with Benvolio and Mercutio waiting for Romeo, who slipped away last night after the party
- Overnight, Tybalt sent a letter to Romeo challenging him to a fight. Tybalt feels that Romeo and his crew disrespected the Capulet family by showing up
- Benvolio is confident that Romeo can handle Tybalt; Mercutio is not: Romeo is a heartbroken mess & Tybalt is a great fighter
- Mercutio heckles Romeo for ditching them last night
- The two immediately begin their usual back and forth banter
- Mercutio realizes Romeo is back and better than ever
"If ye should lead her in a fool's paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behavior as they say"
Nurse's Inspection
- Juliet has told Nurse about her agreement to marry Romeo, and has asked her to follow up with Romeo and the wedding details
- When she meets Romeo and the gang on the street, Mercutio takes the moment to roast her for being old, large, and hairy
- A flustered Nurse inquires into Romeo's intentions with Juliet
- She warns him that he better not be "dealing double" with her; she mentions Count Paris waiting in the wings
- Romeo tells Nurse to have Juliet meet him at Friar Laurence's church this afternoon
- He tells Nurse to use Juliet's confessional as an excuse
- Romeo then instructs Nurse to leave a rope ladder outside Juliet's bedroom window that evening so that he can
- consummate the marriage
