Kounins discipline model

Jacob Kounin

Who was Kounin

- Kounin was born in Clevland Ohio in 1912

- He did a lot of research in 1970s about classroom management and focused on preventive classroom discipline and lesson plan techniques

-He did a lot of research on the teacher as well as some on student behaviors and how teachers could try to prevent bad behavior before it occurred

Teacher Behaviour

Movement managment

Group focus

three key concepts

Teacher Behaviour

Teacher Behavior

Withitness

Ripple effects

Overlapping

Having eyes in the back of your head

Withitness

- The teacher knows or gives off the perception that they know everthing that is going on in the room

- When calling out misbehavior it is important to find the instigator of the situation and not another student

- Keep you back to the wall when scanning the room

Ripple effect- When one student is called out for misbehavior the other students tend to stop or not do that action

Ripple effects are more effective when:

-The student is given a reason why the student should not conduct that behavior

-Correction is given at the beginning of the year

- Corrected firmly

Ripple effects

Overlapping

Overlapping is when two things must be handled at once

Some may call it multitasking other swtiching between tasks very quickly

This concept connects to or "overlaps" with the other two

Ex. students in hallways, group work feedback

Movement managment/transitions

Movement managment

Momentum/smoothness

Summary/preparation

Momentum: Flowing through the lesson at a consistant pace with few slowdowns. This helps with students misbehaving and gives less downtime

Smoothness: staying on task, not abruptly changing the lesson or getting distracted

Momentum/smoothness

Summary/prep

Plan out transtions and try to make them as simple and straightforward as possible

-Focus on key points when transitioning not details

-Transitions are one of the biggest wasters of intructional time

Group alerting and accountability

Group Focus

Group alerting: Attempting to maintain the attention of the class- asking questions, vary students called upon, keep them on their toes

Accountability: Record keeping (student and teacher), checklists/tasklists. Students do better and stay on task better when held accountable for what they do
