Border Militarization

Breakdown

Breakdown

On May 20, 1997 Esequiel Hernandez was shot by a US marine. He was killed herding goats. As the US military grew, more and more troops were sent to patrol the border. This was also a result of a string of Congressional decisions. Nevertheless, this process came to be known as "Border Militarization".

Critical Race Theory

Due to their bureaucratic tendencies, the military and border patrol target 'subordinated' demographics. This includes both working and poor undocumented immigrants, as well as base level drug dealers (mules). According to Border Militarization (Dunn), "this generally means people with a latino/a appearance, especially Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

Social

Acording to Border Militarization (Dunn) unsubordinated groups experienced a violation of human rights through a process called social triage. On top of being repressed, their well being and dignity are cut down.

Due to an increase in military presence near the border (a result of congress), immigrants consistently face biased border patrol officers. The Redford shooting incident alone proves that the military is trained to quickly treat issues, rather than step back and assess as police officers (are expected to) do. The major difference between the two is smaller units like police officers are taught to troubleshoot problems with the constitution in mind, troops do not. Until then the border will always be a place of maltreatment

Although I couldn't find much information regarding this topic, the border patrol is starting to be more closely examined. Nowhere near where we need to be but it's a start. Recenty, according to CBS, an officer was caught sending explicit pictures of dead immigrants on facebook. "This was one of 60 cases cited in a sweeping investigation by the Democratic-controlled committee of Customs and Border Protection agents who committed "serious misconduct" by sharing explicit and violent messages such as these on secret Facebook pages."

After the Redford shooting the Hernandez family settled a lawsuit for 1.9 million dollars. The judge ruled that Esequiel had been wrongfully killed by a marine. It is with their use of justice that the Hernandez family has helped bring light of this situation to the public. This incident could've meant Esequiel becoming another statistic on a graph.
