At the beginning of the book, Martin approaches Simon and says that he has screenshots of Blue and Simon's emails. Martin says that he'll post the screenshots on the Tumblr if Simon does not help him impress Abby. Martin wants to date Abby, and since Simon is friends with her, Martin wants Simon to help him in exchange for not posting his emails on the Tumblr.
Simon, Leah, Abby, and Nick go to Garrett's Halloween party. A lot happens during this party. Simon drinks a beer, which is very out of character for him, and Nick plays teh guitar in front of a group of people. Abby wants to dance with Nick, and Martin goes with them to try to spend more time with Abby.
Nick suggests to his friends that instead of going to Waffle House like they do every year, they should go to the homecoming football game. Simon says that he will go to the game, and Leah gets mad at her friends for breaking their tradition.
Abby arrives at the table and asks who is excited about the football game, which angers Leah, since she does not like Abby and she also does not want to go to the game. Leah abruptly leaves the table, which leaves Simon, Nick, and Abby confused.
Simon and Nick arrive at the football game. Abby meets them there, and invites them to walk in the parade. After the parade, Simon sits with his drama club friends. He talks to Cal Price, and he spectulates how Cal could be Blue. Simon and Nick both enjoy the game, despite this being their first football game in all of their high school years.
On Simon's birthday, Leah gives him a mix of some songs as a present. She also apologizes for overreacting about her friends going to the football game. In lunch, Simon gets a cake, since it is a tradition for his friend group that on their birthdays, someone brings a sheet cake to school to eat during lunch. During play practice, Cal comes up to Simon and wishes him a happy birthday.
Simon invites Abby and Martin to Waffle House to go over their lines for the play. At Waffle House, Martin is desperately trying to flirt with Abby. Neither Abby nor Martin know their lines very well, and Martin keeps trying to talk to Abby about non-play related topics. At the end of their time at Waffle House, Simon admits that Martin is growing on him, and that he is not as bad as Simon originally thought he was.
While Simon is driving Abby home from their second trip to Waffle House, he decides to come out to Abby. He says that he was inspired by Blue, since in their emails, Blue was talking about coming out to his mom. Simon told Abby in the car, and she was very accepting. Since Abby was the first person that Simon has ever come out to, he was understandably very nervous.
At the all day rehearsal for the play, Ms. Albright has everyone split into two groups. Simon is put in a group with Cal, and after they are done rehearsing, the kids in the group race each other on rolling chairs. After that, Simon and Abby sit next to each other on the floor, and Simon has his arm around Abby.
Both Cal and Martin see Abby and Simon together, and Martin looks furious. Martin pulls Simon aside and asks him why he had his arm around Abby. Martin then leaves rehearsal early and says that their agreement to help each other is over.
Simon notices that his friends have been acting weird around him. Nick and Leah wanted to take a walk to talk about him, and they were acting very strange. When Simon got home, Nora came into his room to show Simon something. He noticed that she was also acting weird. She told him to go on the Tumblr, and when he did, he found that Martin posted something about how Simon was gay.
After Simon's sexual identity was revealed to the whole school, Simon wanted to come out to his family. He came out on Christmas, and his family was very accepting of him. He found comfort in the predictability of his family's reactions. Although he did not want to come out yet, he was almost forced to because of Martin's post on the Tumblr. He felt that since the whole school knew, he should tell his family.
On New Years Eve, Abby, Nick, and Leah come over to Simon's house. Even though they have all already seen the post on the Tumblr, Simon announces that he is gay. Simon says to not make a big deal about it, so Nick only says "Okay." Abby does not think this is good enough, and she tells him to "awkwardly hold his hand like [she] did" (Albertalli 178). Leah gets upset that Simon told Abby before her or Nick.
Blue and Simon are emailing back and forth, and Blue mentions that he thinks he knows who Simon is. Simon says that he wants to guess who Blue is. Simon describes Cal Price in his guesses, but he was incorrect. Blue guesses correctly, so know Blue knows who Simon is, but Simon does not know who Blue is.
Simon and the rest of the drama club perform the show for the school. However, before the show, some people crossed out a few letters on Martin and Simon's characters in the cast list in the atrium. Martin plays Fagin, and Simon plays Fagin's boy, so someone crossed out the "I" and "N" in both of their characters names. Ms. Albright talks to Martin and Simon, and after some consideration, they decide to still perform the play.
Abby, Nick, and Simon decide to go to Midtown without Leah. They end up going to a gay bar, where Simon meets a guy named Peter. Simon gets very drunk and Peter brings him to talk with his friends. When Simon goes home, his parents see that he is drunk, so they ground him for two weeks and take away his phone and his laptop.
Before the play, Simon is talking to Abby. She is giving very short, curt answers, so he asks her if she is mad at him. Abby tells Simon that she found out that Simon was trying to set her and Martin up. Abby told Simon that Martin told her about "the blackmail thing," and she was very mad at Simon. She was upset that even though he knew that Abby did not like Martin, Simon still went along with it. Even with Abby being mad at Simon, the play still goes very well.
Simon emails Blue telling him to go to the carnival, since he will be there. Simon does not expect Blue to show up, so he hangs out with his friends, who have forgiven him. The last ride he goes on is the Tilt-A-Whirl, and Bram Greenfeld sits next to him. Simon figures out that Bram is Blue, so when they get off the ride, they talk to each other. Bram says that he knew that it was Simon for a while, and he wanted Simon to figure out that he was Blue.
Bram proposes that he and Simon go off campus to lunch. They go to the supermarket and buy Oreos and milk to eat in Bram's car. When they get back in Bram's car, Simon kisses Bram. They discuss what their future will be, since Simon does not know if Bram is ready to come out. However, Bram surprises him, and they decide to start dating.
Simon is at home when he sees Nora being dropped off by Leah. He wants to go talk to her, but since he is grounded, he has to stay inside. He and his mom make a deal, and Simon is allowed to go out for the night. Leah forgives Simon for excluding her from their trip to Midtown. She also forgives him for coming out to Abby before her.
Simon and Nick go to the talent show together, and they sit with Garrett and Bram. Abby performs, which Simon knew about, but then he sees a band performing. His sister, Nora, and Leah are both in the band. Simon did not know about this, so he was very surprised. Nick reveals that he knew that Nora was in the band, but he did not tell Simon because he knew that he would make it a big deal.
When the talent show ends, Theo, Alice's boyfriend, tells Simon that his parents are going to invite him to a celebratory dinner. Theo instructs Simon to say no, since it will give him and Bram time alone at Simon's house. Simon and Bram go back to Simon's house and spend some time alone with each other. Simon's parents come back, and Simon's mom sees Bram and Simon sitting on the couch together. Simon knows that she will talk to him about it later, but he does not care.
