Significance of Egyptian Religion

Origin of Myth

As the lord of crocodiles, he was depicted with a crocodile head. In the old kingdom, Sobek's prominence at the time had focused on his cult center at Fayum (or back then Shedet). Later on his myth grew; Sobek was known for his quick movements. He was an unpredictable deity along with his crocodile parts. Many times Sobek was asscociated with chaos. The people worshiped him to not only appease him and the crocodiles, but to ensure the fertility of their crops. Pleasing Sobek ensures the fertility, because Sobek had created the Nile by using his sweat, according to many myths.

Sobek's Relatives

Family Tree

Neith was the mother of Sobek, and Neith is Isis's sister. Isis was the mother of Horus. In this case, Sobek was Horus's cousin. Sobek's father was known, sometimes, as Seth.
