"MEDIA" - forms of mass communication

Your

stats

Think about how much time you spend on different media types: TV, social media, books. Make a quick graph to show your time spent on each per day.

Do you think you spend more, less or the same as your peers? How could spending a lot of time on media affect you? Good ways? Bad ways? Make a T chart next to your graph to show the good ways social media can affect you, and the bad ways.

Social

Media

How many of these social media sites have you used?

How many have you even heard of?

Ads

What is your MEdia trying to tell you?

Think back to ads/commercials you've seen lately.

What is your MEdia trying to tell you?

Ways Ads hook you:

From the Girl Scout MEdia book

1. Association: Links a product, service or idea with something people want, like happiness, comfort or safety.

2. Bribery: promises you something else, such as a rebate or "free" gift, if you buy the product.

3. Get on the Bandwagon: Shows lots of people enjoying a product, with the hope that you won't want to be left out.

4. The Beautiful People: Features good looking models in fashionable clothes and places to grab your attention.

5. Fear: Links a product, service or idea to a "solution" to something people fear, like bad breath or higher taxes.

6. Humor: makes you laugh. (Who doesn't want to laugh?)

HOW is that ad selling you?

Think back to ads you've seen recently.

Look at the previous information about how ads hook you. Name an ad for each way - if you can't think of one, make it a game. How long do you need to spend on MEdia before you find an example of each?

Photoshop fails!

Why were these ads changed? What was the goal? Who do you think (tried to) change them?

Check out some of the statistics on women in film.

Think about the current movies (check your local theater's listings). How many have a woman as a lead character? How many have a minority as a lead character?

What can you do to change the statistics?

MONITOR

To earn the

MONITOR award:

award

Create and distribute a survey among your peers regarding their MEdia usage. You may want to be sure you're using current MEdia outlets, as you've seen so far in this journey, they change quickly!

You may choose to poll your peers through a Survey Monkey, a Facebook poll, or just ask them. YOU decide.

Now that you've identified the media that's all around you, you have plenty of ideas - positive and negative - about the media, and probably some ideas about the story you'd like to change through your MEdia remake!
