The turtle's diet mainly consists of woodland plants and fruits such as berries and jasmine plants. They are omnivores and also eat flowers, insects, snails, and even some frogs and lizards.
The biomes that these turtles like in are forests, savannahs, grasslands, and the inland portion of the wetlands. The areas the population is in includes India and Nepal. It's a locally endangered species and typically lives in the deciduous forests there.
This species is local in both India and Nepal. They are endangered in this area because of human harm. Humans capture these turtles and use them for merchandise and food. A lot of them are sold and traded.
There are turtle protection organizations such as the Turtle Survival Alliance. They work with India's local law enforcement and organizations to help regulate the excess amounts of trading because it's so predominant in India. For the wide majority, people aren't doing much at all to help save this species from endangerment. Not many people know about this species and the ones that do are the ones that are selling and trading them.
The American Anti-Vivisection Society is a group that focuses on the protection of animals being used in science. They stop the use of animal testing and the use of animals in experiments and research. This group would be a good inspiration for a new group to help populations of smaller species. They could focus on the reducing of the trading and selling of these animals, such as the Tricarinate Hill Turtle.
If the Tricarinate Hill Turtle went extinct, it would affect its food web significantly. While this species may not have a huge affect on people and any other region, it would cause a surplus of the plants it consumes and it would result in its predators having to increase their competition because they would be eliminated as a source of prey.

The Melanochelys tricarinata has a mostly black shell and that acts as a sort of camoflauge. It's around 170 mm, which is little. It typically has orange or yellow stripes down its hard, black shell.
In the United States, all turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. They are safe from being sold, traded, and used for goods. The Tricarinate Hill Turtles aren't from America, so the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 in India helps to protect their lives over in their country.
1. This species of turtle is completely terrestrial.
2. They produce very large eggs because of a specific tissue that the females have.
3. Their births occur in February-May.
4. Mainly found in the North of India, but the South of Nepal.
5. Another name for them is the Three-keeled land turtle.
Over the past three generations, the already small population of tricarinate hill turtles was decreased by 50%. They're a local population and only around 30-50 of them are being found in their areas. There use to be 100-150 of them in these areas. In the 80s, this species was only intermediate and in the early 2000s, they became vulnerable. Just recently in the past 5-8 years have they become endangered. Despite efforts, numbers are still rapidly decreasing.
