When you said something, you used a variable. That unknown value is a variable. I could just end with that note. But that's not it. If you though that was it, why did you think that I made this website? There can be more than one varible in an equation, which we will touch on later. By the way, you can use any type of letter or letter combo to represent as a varible. The true definition of a varible, as shown above, is a letter used to represent a unknown number.
