All About Farmers

A Typical Farmer

A typical farmer in China lived in a small village with about one hundred families. China was surrounded farmers and villages.

Subtopic 1

Farmers Plowing

Farmers had plows, but they sometimes used animals like dogs and oxen. They also did it by hand.

Difficult Lives

Farmers were respected for the food they provided for the rest of the people. They lived difficult lives.

Food is an important role in China. The food that they ate depended on were they lived.

What Kind of Food

In the South the main crop was rice. In the North the main crop was a grain called millet. People that lived by the river ate fish.

A Difficult Life

Chinese women had a very rough life. Women are not as valuable as men. Sometimes when a baby girl is born and the family does not want her they put her outside to die. This was considered okay in their society. They also did not have a say so who they could marry.

The farmers had to work for the government for at least one month a year.

Farmers either have to serve the military or work construction projects.

How Did They Pay

Farmers had to pay a tax each year to the government.They paid this tax, by giving them a percentage of their crops.
