Synthesis
What is Synthesis
- The combination of ideas
- A discussion that forges the connection of ideas
- Pinpoints the main ideas of a text, movie, or argument
- Each doll fits inside another, just like growing bigger with each doll.
- Our thought grow as we read but they are still about the same book
Think of it this way...
- When a droplet falls in water there is just one ripple, but that ripple creates another, and another
- But all of the thoughts come from that one droplet
- Just like this our thinking grows as we read
Our thinking grows and changes over the course of text
Therefore
Why are we synthesizing
We are synthesizing to gain a new, deepened or changed understanding about the characters or events in books

What will I find when synthesizing?
- The main idea from a source
- The literary devices used
- Textual evidence
- Connection of ideas
- Theme
Remember Synthesis is NOT the Same as a Summary
Remember
In a synthesis include:

questions
- The name of the text
- The name of the author
- The theme of the text
- How the theme is achieved through plot and characters
- Use textual evidence

- You will practice synthesis in class
- You will then have a quiz on synthesis on September 2 or 3rd
- This depends if you are A-Block or B-Block
