Louisianas 1800s

Ja'rese Williams

TOPIC 1

Due to slow communications, the Battle of New Orleans was fought two weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814, ending the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. General Andrew Jackson, who led between 6,000 and 7,000 troops to victory, emerged from the battle a national hero. Louisiana’s capital city is Baton Rouge. It is also home to the historic port city New Orleans, which is famous for its unique cuisine, jazz and spectacular Mardi Gras festival.

TOPIC 2

The history of the area that is now the US state of Louisiana began roughly 10,000 years ago. European influence began in the 16th century, and La Louisiane (named after Louis XIV of France) became a colony of the Kingdom of France in 1682, before passing to Spain in 1763.

TOPIC 3

The rest of Louisiana, including New Orleans, is formally ceded to Spain and incorporated as Louisiana or Spanish Louisiana into the Spanish Empire. In 1800, the Spanish ceded Louisiana back to France only to have Napoleon sell the city and what was the Louisiana territory to the United States three years later as part of the $15 million Louisiana Purchase, April 30,1803. Although the French sold Louisiana, residents in New Orleans chose not to be abandoned.

TOPIC 4

In 1803, Thomas Jefferson doubled the size of the United States by purchasing the Louisiana Territory. 828,000 square miles of land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. Louisiana was the first of 13 states, or parts of states, to be carved out of the territory in 1812.

TOPIC 5

Louisiana is home to some of America's most colorful culture, including a huge Creole and Cajun population. The Spanish, French, African, and Native American influences are visible in every conceivable way. They speak their own language, have their own style of music and a uniquely delectable cuisine. The state is laid back and unpretentious, with deep cultural roots that are protected and maintained with incredible fervor, especially on display in New Orleans. Prepare to throw caution to the wind and be transported into what feels like another country as you travel through Louisiana.
