Design Challenge

Intro

Intro

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering's Open House Design Challenge!

Goal

Goal

  • In this activity, we will learn about structures.
  • We will discuss load distribution, foundations, and other design features that may help ensure a tower stays standing.
  • You will then attempt to construct a tall, sturdy tower using only items found throughout your kitchen!

Discussion

Discussion

  • What is the tallest tower you can think of?
  • What features do you notice on this tower that might ensure it remains stable?
  • What qualities might a foundation need to have in order to support a tall structure?
  • What shapes can distribute a heavy load the most evenly?

Important Concepts

Important Concepts

  • Foundations- When designing a structure, engineers must consider both the dimensions of the base and what surface the base will be built on. Ideally, a wide foundation will sit on a flat, even, firm surface.
  • Geometric shapes- Engineers must also consider what shapes will make up the "skeleton" of their structure. Which shapes can bear the most load?
  • Reinforcement- Engineers must consider how the load will be distributed within the frame of their building. The weight of the top cannot crush the bottom. They must consider placing supports such as beams throughout the building so that the weight can be spread out rather than focused in a small region.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS CHALLENGE EXCLUDES ANYTHING BREAKABLE OR HEAVY ENOUGH TO CAUSE INJURY

Your Challenge:

Challenge

You will be given 15 minutes to build the tallest tower you can using only items found in your kitchen. Possibilities include- cereal boxes, cracker boxes, spatulas, wooden spoons, plastic containers, etc.

Once the 15 minute time has run out, you can measure your tower and share your results.

Reflection

Reflection

  • How tall was your tower?
  • What challenges did you encounter?
  • What features did the tallest towers have in common?
  • What engineering principles did you apply?
  • What other designs could you have used?
  • What other items could you have used if you weren't limited to kitchen items?
