Communism vs Democracy

By Liam Sousa and Michael Elliott

Communism

Communism is a system of government that has a single political party control the government and economy.

like any systems of government there are pros and cons, here are a few.

Pros: communist countries tend to have lower unemployment rates and tend to have more stable economies due to the government control over the economy.

Cons

Some cons of communism are how your individual rights are restricted due to the government deciding how and what you work for, making it harder to pursue individual interests. also many people live in poverty under communist rule because wages are only the bare minimum and saving/inheritance isn't allowed as the money you earn isn't your money but the government's

democracy

Democracy

democracy is a system of government where the people have supreme power, almost a night and day opposite to communism.

here are some pros and cons of democracy:

Pros:

democracy promotes equality because every vote carry the same weight, so no one person has less influence over the other.

Cons:

democracy allows for large groups to have unfair influence over votes, a good example

is the democratic and republican parties in american politics.

Similarities

Similarities & Differences

First of all, both Communism and Democracy are political systems used around the world today. Both systems are against discrimination and believe in equality. Also they both believe that societal needs are more important than individual needs. Neither democracy nor communism believe that capitalism is appropriate.

Differences

First of all, in a democracy the citizens of the country are in the power and have the right to elect new government officials. In communism, it is ruled throughout by one political party. Communist countries believe that war is good for the economy while democratic countries believe that war causes economic and political instability. Finally, religion is abolished and rejected in communist countries rather than in Democratic countries where it is permitted.

Communism

Where it's used

While many believe that Russia is a communist country, communism in Russia ended after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Russia's 1993 constitution declares Russia a democratic, federation, law-based state with a republican government. China, Vietnam, Cuba, and Laos are the only countries currently around the world still with a communist government. North Korea is also known around the world as a communist country but it doesn't consider itself one.

Democracy has been a system of government around for hundreds of years and is often associated with a civilized country. The countries with democratic governments are given an index number depending on how full or how flawed their democracy is.(10 is best)
