Definition

Cultual Identity

Cultural Identity is the definition of groups or individuals (by themselves or others) in terms of cultural or subcultural categories (including ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, and gender). In stereotyping, this is framed in terms of difference or otherness.

Cultural Identity Theory

Cultural identity becomes evident through social comparison.

  • suggests a relationship between inter-cultural competence and cultural identity

  • deals with the study: how individiuals use their communication in order to construct their cultural group identities and relationships

  • says that many identities are expressed in communication

Speakers compare the status position of their own group to those of other groups.
