Malcom X Assassination

  • FBI followed Malcolm's Life

  • Muhammed Aziz was falsely accused of the assassination

  • Elijah Muhammed believed Malcom X was too powerful

  • His powerful charisma drew followers and supporters
  • Was a vocal leader on Civil Rights

  • People said he was too powerful

  • One of the most visible civil rights leaders to exist

  • Fighting for rights of colored people along with voting rights

Bloody Sunday

March 7, 1965. Selma, Alabama

Bloody Sunday

What Happened?

  • More than 15 protesters were hospitalized for being beaten
  • Protesters formed the Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
  • Police attacked protesters when they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
  • Started after a state trooper shot Jimmie Lee Jackson, a peaceful protester.
  • Protesters were beaten till they were bloody.

Importance

  • Showed how people were against african american citizens

  • Showing how far people would go to not allow the african american people to speak out and peacefully protest

  • African americans opinion was shared more through the media.

Stokely Carmichael

June 16, 1966. New York City

What Happened?

  • Leader of Black Nationalists

  • Immigrant from Guinea

  • Joined Student nonviolent coordinating committee and later became head chair of the SNCC

Importance

  • Created Black Power

  • Challenged segregation on public transportation

  • Supported voting of colored people

  • Influenced Political and economic power along with racial pride.

  • Helped to establish an all African-People's Revolutionary Party

Chicago Riots

April 5th, 1968. Westside Chicago

What Happened?

  • The residents of the city decided to start a two-day siege by breaking into stores, stealing goods, and setting houses and buildings on fire.

  • Most of the west side communities were torn apart and the residents from the west weren't to blame.

  • Some residents explained how the riots were comparable to a natural disaster with the amount of damage it did.

  • Riots started as school students protesting downtown.

Importance

  • Result of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. more than 200 people were killed.

  • People were not happy with the assassination of MLK and Chicago residents used rioting and looting as a way to portray their anger.
